You can communicate via audio or video, share your screen, share a document residing on Google Drive, take control of another participant's computer screen (with their permission of course), and even stream your meeting live on YouTube.<br />
<br />

All participants need to have a Google account (if you have a gmail address you have a Google account). Sign in and click your name at the upper right (screenshot at right). This will take you to your Google+ dashboard.<br />
<br />
At the upper left of the new page you will see a pulldown menu. Choose <b>Hangouts</b>.<br />
<br />
Choose <b>Hangouts on Air</b>, then Choose <b>Start a Hangout On Air</b> (screenshot below). <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The dialogue box that appears (screenshot below) allows you to name the session and give it a description. You can start the session immediately by selecting <b>Now</b>, or choose <b>Later </b>and <b></b>select a meeting time. Under Audience, you can type in individual gmail addresses or circles of friends, and even choose <b>Public </b>if you like, where the meeting will be publicly broadcast on YouTube.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Click the big blue <b>Start </b>button. Once the meeting begins, there are an array of options available to you from the toolbars to the left and at the top (screenshot below). You can communicate audio only, or with video and audio (all participants will have those options as well). You also have options to open a chat window share your screen, share a document through Google Drive, share a YouTube video, invite new participants on the fly, take control of another computer, and much more. </div>

They are all excellent tools.<br />
<br />
Sometimes, however, you need just the opposite: a simple to do list where you can quickly write things down that you need to do that day, as they occur to you. I use Wunderlist (<a href="https://www.wunderlist.com/">www.wunderlist.com/</a>), and I like it. It's simple and straightforward. I keep it on my desktop, nearly always open, and add tasks as they occur to me, check off tasks I've completed. It syncs across platforms so you can access it from your phone or tablet. You can drop and drag tasks into Work, Personal, and other categories, or create your own categories. You can also add due dates and reminders.<br />
<br />
It's simple, it's easy, it gets the job done. And it's free!<br />

<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieFORkBN4NmHmRRbfsPayzpn1fwvYwNohu4sAY-yeEe8xnLQsMdRJ7TRZQYM5lLY9xe2xAiEv_7e6BmViDK2WIJ1AJWt4GlaQHCrmJ7iK0KA8gb5eHOWZN1OpWrVvmLoTAnuPh3CF6NEVc/s1600/sf2.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieFORkBN4NmHmRRbfsPayzpn1fwvYwNohu4sAY-yeEe8xnLQsMdRJ7TRZQYM5lLY9xe2xAiEv_7e6BmViDK2WIJ1AJWt4GlaQHCrmJ7iK0KA8gb5eHOWZN1OpWrVvmLoTAnuPh3CF6NEVc/s1600/sf2.png" /></a>It's free, and will automatically discover what browser you are using and provides the appropriate add-in. Once added, it will take you through a Wizard to show you to use the most commonly used features of Social Fixer. A small icon will then appear in the upper right corner to give you access to all the tools available in Social Fixer.<br />
<br />
You should definitely click the icon to see all the options allowed (the screenshot below is just one of fourteen tabs of options). The Wizard will take you through the most basic options, but clicking the icon and seeing all the options available is really where Social Fixer begins to shine. You can change the width of the display (or go full width of your browser window), add and remove features in the side columns, force the most recent stories to display first (as opposed to Facebook deciding what you want to see), get rid of sponsored posts, change color themes, even write your own CSS for your Facebook page.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPLuiUP0F0WLbho2pEzgpnkTGMNJ0Ua-3tplTIqu1CFHq_O4w2gF6TVcvsPUM2DkcmPAgnj0b0R7kC2R_Qq4gbTuKkzPrGI6sLUThosfoYI7EDgbzWCNSxqkHDLSi0QMe_U-u4aUmo6_L_/s1600/sf1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPLuiUP0F0WLbho2pEzgpnkTGMNJ0Ua-3tplTIqu1CFHq_O4w2gF6TVcvsPUM2DkcmPAgnj0b0R7kC2R_Qq4gbTuKkzPrGI6sLUThosfoYI7EDgbzWCNSxqkHDLSi0QMe_U-u4aUmo6_L_/s1600/sf1.png" height="292" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Because of the sheer number of available options, it takes some tweaking to get things just right, turning off some features after you've tried them, turning some features back on. But after getting a sense of how Social Fixer works, you can customize Facebook to make it a much more useful and enjoyable experience.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4874987539749043084.post-78508743007000632182013-11-21T12:08:00.001-08:002013-11-21T12:08:15.960-08:00The New Prezi<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

free, browser-based, online presentation tool that allows you to build
presentations that are a refreshing change from the tired familiarity of PowerPoint. It allows you to break away from the march-step of bullet points that
PowerPoint forces you into, and offers a non-linear and visually
exciting way to present information.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm2DbwmDwKCgb9ibc2EfEgDJHt4eBWL9i6xwTsfNRgdxiAOV2rdSsiamCj6ElIVdYkys43Y4Y2KSjbT-RrFBPLVnv8UA0n5zkRk3kYYk85nQbenjSbL8v828KGOqYHTPn8ZvjJti9WUdvK/s1600/pr5.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="163" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm2DbwmDwKCgb9ibc2EfEgDJHt4eBWL9i6xwTsfNRgdxiAOV2rdSsiamCj6ElIVdYkys43Y4Y2KSjbT-RrFBPLVnv8UA0n5zkRk3kYYk85nQbenjSbL8v828KGOqYHTPn8ZvjJti9WUdvK/s200/pr5.png" width="200" /></a>The interface has changed rather drastically since last year. The zebra
and bubble tool are gone (I personally loved working with the zebra),
and replaced with more traditional menu choices at the top of the
screen (upper left), as well as clearly labeled editing options when an object is
selected (lower left).<br />
<br />
The
result is still the same, and old Prezis can be edited with the new
tools. It is still a excellent alternative to PowerPoint. Below I've
embedded a presentation that gives you an idea of what a Prezi
presentation looks like, as well as some tips on how to create an
effective presentation (best viewed full-screen, use your left and right arrow keys to navigate).<br />
<br />
There will be a Connect session on how to work with the new Prezi interface early next year.<br />

Admittedly, the online message boards are alight with dissatisfied users who preferred the previous version of Photoshop Express, but personally I found it easy and fun to use, with an intuitive interface and useful, if limited, set of tools. It is available for both Apple and Android devices, and both tablet and phone.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjreixBNA6j1009QqlRdV16X1SEuyV82Qdk4buNdU6WU3hPUOPPZwu4WCtJ-lQUr1nxz_8W1Cn5buNus2Fj1d9u1TnSWzy8nC1gs1_7jSfMAK-g3qk9L0IQoXcrcVOLaU_XA2Pohi61D00C/s1600/PS1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjreixBNA6j1009QqlRdV16X1SEuyV82Qdk4buNdU6WU3hPUOPPZwu4WCtJ-lQUr1nxz_8W1Cn5buNus2Fj1d9u1TnSWzy8nC1gs1_7jSfMAK-g3qk9L0IQoXcrcVOLaU_XA2Pohi61D00C/s200/PS1.png" width="200" /></a><br />
There are more tools available on the tablet version (screenshot at right) than there are the phone version (screenshot at left). Both allow you to do basic cropping/rotating/straightening and color correction. Both have a variety of special effects and borders from which to choose. Available (and free!) at the iTunes Store and Google Play.<br />

<br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4874987539749043084.post-74567452135796986542013-10-21T15:45:00.003-07:002013-10-21T15:57:45.907-07:00Quickoffice App is Free!If, like me, you've already paid $19.99 for Quickoffice Pro, you might not be too happy to hear this, but now Google is offering Quickoffice for free. You need to have a Google account to use it, and since it works in concert with Google Drive (formerly Google Docs), you will need that free app as well. You can get it in the iTunes store or at Google Play.<br />
<br />
Quickoffice allows you to view, edit and create Microsoft Office documents created in Word, Powerpoint and Excel on your tablet or phone. It is designed to work seamlessly with Google Drive, automatically saving and retrieving documents from there. Unlike the old paid version, you cannot easily retrieve documents from other cloud services, such as Dropbox. This is the only real drawback to the new version.<br />
<br />
The good news: the new version makes it much easier to create documents from scratch, which was an annoying problem in the old version (my personal opinion). The old version is not fully compatible with iOS7 (the latest Apple OS), and will not be supported after March, 2014. <br />
<br />
For the next two years, Google is giving you 10gb of storage for free, as an incentive to using it. And it's free! So, if you are a current user of Quickoffice Pro, or looking for an app to create and view MS Office documents on, I'd recommend Quickoffice. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4874987539749043084.post-66422611596415855122013-09-26T15:31:00.003-07:002013-09-26T15:33:32.619-07:00Evernote ClearlyEvernote Clearly (<a href="http://evernote.com/clearly/">http://evernote.com/clearly/</a>) is an add-in for Chrome, Firefox and Opera that allows you to strip away the menus, ads and other extraneous content and only keep text and pictures. The goal is to allow you to send a stripped down version of the page to Evernote for storage (I have a <a href="http://technotoolbox.blogspot.com/2013/07/evernote.html">previously posted about Evernote</a>, an app I become more enthusiastic about as I add content to it).<br />
<br />
And while that alone makes Clearly a very useful tool, what makes it even more useful is that you don't even need to use it in the context of Evernote, but can simply use it to strip away all the distractions and advertisements and only focus on content.<br />
<br />
Here's a random example. Before...<br />

In addition to the icon, there is a slide out menu (see screenshot at right) that allows you to highlight, print, change text size, and send to Evernote. Clearly is an excellent companion to an already remarkably useful tool.<br />

<br />
<br />
ExtendOffice (<a href="http://www.extendoffice.com/download/office-tab.html">http://www.extendoffice.com/download/office-tab.html</a>) is a free add-in for Microsoft Office that adds tab functions to Word, PowerPoint and Excel (the paid version also adds them to Publisher, Access and Visio). This allows you to move quickly between documents, particularly useful if you are comparing documents or copy-and-pasting sections of content from one document to the other. The screenshot at the upper right shows the tabs of two presentations pulled up in PowerPoint 2010, so the two presentations can be accessed more quickly, simply by clicking the tab.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXUfLUTrjsNIfRU98ZQUJd2qcfW9QlKJWE-vKXnu_6GdqHn9NDeARwjMUiDI1Tx_GYmzh_guYAxB3LT2_36BXBM8TdN3CbmesWSu9_8ExF76uxCykbL9Au-THC4HqeTwTpHlksoqJkcaJQ/s1600/tabs3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXUfLUTrjsNIfRU98ZQUJd2qcfW9QlKJWE-vKXnu_6GdqHn9NDeARwjMUiDI1Tx_GYmzh_guYAxB3LT2_36BXBM8TdN3CbmesWSu9_8ExF76uxCykbL9Au-THC4HqeTwTpHlksoqJkcaJQ/s320/tabs3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The tabs are very customizable, and different settings can be used for different Microsoft programs (tab options for Word are shown at left). It is compatible with Office 2003, 2007, 2010, and 2013.<br />

You can install it onto all of your devices (desktops, laptops, tablets, phones) and it will automatically sync your devices so they all share the same information (this can also be done manually). There are add-ons for Outlook and most browsers as well, so you can quickly send emails and websites to your Evernote account. And it's free!<br />
<br />
You can, for example, add to your shopping list from your desktop throughout the week, and when shopping day comes along you just take your phone with you, and your up-to-date list will be in Evernote. The folks at Evernote suggest that you start with one project (a shopping list is a great place to start) until you get a sense of how it works, then branch out onto other projects.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5u0TIMOidUTBHYGfeeBTH5MRVxzyEP5g5gr4DNH8IW3IsbCfNAtQuK7e2oI7t1ziG12OrVD2qIi7fZrdnDVTB6czXExZ9KbwMhZfcaI4UfvHZp1KDNyZJAvC7zXJtlk2ESuCyGTqljbUN/s1600/ev2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5u0TIMOidUTBHYGfeeBTH5MRVxzyEP5g5gr4DNH8IW3IsbCfNAtQuK7e2oI7t1ziG12OrVD2qIi7fZrdnDVTB6czXExZ9KbwMhZfcaI4UfvHZp1KDNyZJAvC7zXJtlk2ESuCyGTqljbUN/s1600/ev2.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4V0qIfdD9_Smvyuq1b1I2vozSvAX3KP67rWXgWLfzw4QggeIHmuywlIsrkJDth02srHsYShmYz3m46dZUT_EFGbB61s5AoqP5FmLPGHcRmCXiIwaqBsnFdPLqfT2gc_RtgKiupe4oIEHT/s1600/ev1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="98" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4V0qIfdD9_Smvyuq1b1I2vozSvAX3KP67rWXgWLfzw4QggeIHmuywlIsrkJDth02srHsYShmYz3m46dZUT_EFGbB61s5AoqP5FmLPGHcRmCXiIwaqBsnFdPLqfT2gc_RtgKiupe4oIEHT/s200/ev1.jpg" width="200" /></a>Its versatility becomes more apparent the more you use it. You don't need to be in Evernote to add notes. Outlook allows you to forward an email simply by clicking an icon (screenshot at left). Browsers with the Evernote add-on have a similar icon so you can send an entire webpage as a note, or if you have selected a portion of the page, it will clip only that section (screenshot at right).<br />
<br />
It also works well as a place to store documents. You can email documents, pictures, audio and video to your account. If you have your notes divided into folders, put @name-of-folder in the subject line of the email, and it will go to that folder. Similarly, if you put #name-of-tag in the subject line, it will automatically tag the note for you.<br />
<br />
Evernote accounts can be shared with colleagues, so you can set up accounts for specific projects. While you are limited to 60 mb of data a month, storage is <i>unlimited</i>. <br />
<br />
There is much more to this versatile tool. Give it a try at <a href="https://evernote.com/">https://evernote.com/</a>. We will delve into the specifics of its use in a Connect session this Fall.<br />

It sounds simple, but potential uses for it are limitless. It is easy to customize and use, and many examples are available to browse. Find it at <a href="https://ifttt.com/">https://ifttt.com/</a>.<br />
<br />
Examples: Have an email sent to you when someone tags you on Facebook. Have a text message sent to you on any day it is supposed to rain. Email travel receipts to Evernote. Get an email whenever the Mets win.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_HT3keWTpQnX-4SUXJhOGZjjOs42_0RYTTGypGlMqA7qR0Dgsdr7gplEiwtRNz29W4ODhzHOkFHZehAfjzHcxOUSZ16YGGrHOOoculwVjNEktbvxJZ3OdKWfYmWMWpxrcwW0bZHq7OQqT/s1600/ifttt1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="50" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_HT3keWTpQnX-4SUXJhOGZjjOs42_0RYTTGypGlMqA7qR0Dgsdr7gplEiwtRNz29W4ODhzHOkFHZehAfjzHcxOUSZ16YGGrHOOoculwVjNEktbvxJZ3OdKWfYmWMWpxrcwW0bZHq7OQqT/s200/ifttt1.jpg" width="200" /></a>You choose the trigger (the event) and the event (what happens when the trigger is activated). Let's go back to that example where you get emailed when it's going to rain.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8DQKJBi9c9jkXTp-BUUkMuv4Ek3hVXJ4L2GeUBQBi9V6XqkX0HP7mPxOKLab3aMlIWIQ4RzBZgISYQxRn_WoBJpEkm-WRXPljaXOPSzxfYRwDVMhOsE_pAcS2XXQOB8hBN2H_jpP8z0wX/s1600/ifttt2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8DQKJBi9c9jkXTp-BUUkMuv4Ek3hVXJ4L2GeUBQBi9V6XqkX0HP7mPxOKLab3aMlIWIQ4RzBZgISYQxRn_WoBJpEkm-WRXPljaXOPSzxfYRwDVMhOsE_pAcS2XXQOB8hBN2H_jpP8z0wX/s200/ifttt2.jpg" width="200" /></a><br />
The trigger (<u>this</u>) in this example is a specific weather condition (you could also, for example, get a text when the weather goes below freezing). <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjux1mPAyVfFFAXMHXpeuWHPu6E6IrjJuJy_fT9aCjpjP1zfX8LWrcvU7xdPj2IkdB6wNQlj6MNeAZckltFNHE7345wZrc2rcokicByBOWyPEiPJTOG1fqk3WUB1nkx-15WkzTLKnAG9I8W/s1600/ifttt3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="58" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjux1mPAyVfFFAXMHXpeuWHPu6E6IrjJuJy_fT9aCjpjP1zfX8LWrcvU7xdPj2IkdB6wNQlj6MNeAZckltFNHE7345wZrc2rcokicByBOWyPEiPJTOG1fqk3WUB1nkx-15WkzTLKnAG9I8W/s200/ifttt3.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
The action (<u>that</u>) is getting a customized email telling you it's going to rain (you could also, for example, have it send you a text or a post to Evernote).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC2ZVAKIQUdN5DXceWSHYLL31VsAGzfTqE6fAd5ca-bHPQgJtcrWyQLqujKv5TKsnj-17E3QlYNORGstKZYk5BJacEpvpJsVGPFc8vzLuRRR_IWDarIrvhm13W3D7HC5ehPFviGde9vju6/s1600/ifttt4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="173" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC2ZVAKIQUdN5DXceWSHYLL31VsAGzfTqE6fAd5ca-bHPQgJtcrWyQLqujKv5TKsnj-17E3QlYNORGstKZYk5BJacEpvpJsVGPFc8vzLuRRR_IWDarIrvhm13W3D7HC5ehPFviGde9vju6/s200/ifttt4.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
It's very simple, but infinitely customizable, and you can create complex chains of triggers and events. There are many "recipes" on the site, so you can browse until you find one that is close to fitting your needs, and then tweak it until it does exactly what you want it to.<br />
<br />
This is a fun and powerful tool. Give it a try! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4874987539749043084.post-28727823355336344022013-05-09T15:40:00.001-07:002013-05-09T15:43:38.968-07:00Three Ways to Reduce PDF File SizeMost of you who have access to your county's Extension website frequently post Adobe PDFs on the site, as it is seen as a universal format, since it does not requite the end-user to buy anything, but merely download the Adobe Reader. <br />
<br />
Just like images, it is a good idea to compress the size of your PDF document as much as possible, to save valuable file space on the web server. Here are three ways to do so.<br />
<br />
<b>Save as a Reduced Size PDF.</b> In Adobe Acrobat, choose <b>File</b>, then <b>Save As</b>, then <b>Reduced Size PDF</b>. A screenshot is below, taken from Adobe Acrobat Pro X. You'll then get a dialogue box asking for Acrobat version compatibility. As it states in the dialogue box, the later version of Acrobat you choose, the lower the file size.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4tQSIfXgMv1sXlHiMhGwss-afHl0cH8yFcy_Ttx6W3azDl9RRgw1ZO0on8AIrhfQcMXTwa1ZVlkKRzuyTyIYIAohXjvvhAVr-wyibmUaZ4mJCFdxK5r5gJptQjxPATJ3n2nembJF4Ab2d/s1600/acro1a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4tQSIfXgMv1sXlHiMhGwss-afHl0cH8yFcy_Ttx6W3azDl9RRgw1ZO0on8AIrhfQcMXTwa1ZVlkKRzuyTyIYIAohXjvvhAVr-wyibmUaZ4mJCFdxK5r5gJptQjxPATJ3n2nembJF4Ab2d/s400/acro1a.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<b>Optimize the document.</b> In Adobe Acrobat, choose <b>File</b>, then<b> Save As</b>, then <b>Optimized PDF</b>. Set Compression quality to <b>Low </b>(see screenshot below) for both Color and Grayscale Images. For more control, you have a panel on the left to control which objects to compress (Images, Fonts, etc.).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi77S0wD2Ae28167PHGa1PCSqnc7cy0W5J_dv0uJD4kTAqAAXG0KhBqPxOa4sEY5IPZZMp1SZwkZRYdSaNuMyALOM2zjmMwh-wGHRkYRcqUp7SVB7c3poLMHOL6ap4TRrQaWPVrD1aG34Rj/s1600/acro2a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi77S0wD2Ae28167PHGa1PCSqnc7cy0W5J_dv0uJD4kTAqAAXG0KhBqPxOa4sEY5IPZZMp1SZwkZRYdSaNuMyALOM2zjmMwh-wGHRkYRcqUp7SVB7c3poLMHOL6ap4TRrQaWPVrD1aG34Rj/s400/acro2a.jpg" width="400" /><b> </b></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b>Housecleaning.</b> Realize that when you delete a PDF file (or any other file) in your local copy of your website, that file is NOT deleted on the website itself. So, perhaps twice a year, go into the site (in Dreamweaver's FTP use the Remote Panel, typically on the left) and delete any old PDFs (and any other files) that you no longer link to or use. You will be surprised at the unused documents that can accumulate over the months. <br />
<br />
<br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4874987539749043084.post-71798192028113422762013-04-11T11:04:00.000-07:002013-04-11T11:04:17.910-07:00Selecting Recently Modified Files in Dreamweaver This command is a real time-saver. Let's say you've been working on your website for the past two days and you are finally ready to upload your changes to the server, but you've worked on so many pages you don't want to go through the entire site and pick the ones to upload. You can have Dreamweaver do it for you.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ribUz6OexiaQU87NhCy94G6YUUsW192AdAD-7RauCk92PbOd0C0Oogs3z80G5zMAAdQzgD0SaITgXSAgRG_diHURex09o_J9DfncxBbHFte4Jb6kd1m9K15WzssDz71DyjvFzRqwST-e/s1600/dw3a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="100" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ribUz6OexiaQU87NhCy94G6YUUsW192AdAD-7RauCk92PbOd0C0Oogs3z80G5zMAAdQzgD0SaITgXSAgRG_diHURex09o_J9DfncxBbHFte4Jb6kd1m9K15WzssDz71DyjvFzRqwST-e/s200/dw3a.jpg" width="200" /></a>First, expand the File pane using the <b>Expand </b>icon, shown at left (you should always expand the File pane before uploading to the server.).<br />
<br />
Next, go to the <b>Edit </b>menu and choose <b>Select Recently Modified</b>. The dialogue box gives you three useful options, shown below. You can select any files you've created or modified in a specified number of days (the screenshot shows 2 days). You can select files you've worked on in a specific date range. Or, if you are using the Contribute option, you can select files worked on by a specific person.<br />
<br />
Caveat! Dreamweaver often will NOT select images or documents you've added recently, even if you are linking to them from your recently modified page. You need to do that manually. And ALWAYS check your links after you've published.<br />

As might be expected, some of these are fun, some are fairly useless, and some appear to be useful, well-designed on-line tools.<br />
<br />
The most interesting of the 11:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Google Scholar</b> lets you access articles, theses, books, abstracts, etc., from academic websites. <a href="http://scholar.google.com/">http://scholar.google.com/</a></li>
<li> <b>Google Art Project </b>lets you see works of art from museums and galleries all over the world. <a href="http://www.googleartproject.com/">http://www.googleartproject.com/</a> </li>
<li><b>Build With Chrome</b> lets you build 3-D structures with Lego bricks. Truly fun (and my favorite)! <a href="http://www.buildwithchrome.com/static/map">http://www.buildwithchrome.com/static/map</a> </li>
<li><b>Power Searching With Google</b> is a tutorial that gives you tips and tricks for more efficient web searches. <a href="http://www.google.com/insidesearch/landing/powersearching.html">http://www.google.com/insidesearch/landing/powersearching.html</a></li>
<li><b>Encrypted Google</b> lets you search more securely via an encrypted SSL. <a href="https://encrypted.google.com/">https://encrypted.google.com/</a></li>
</ul>

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Click inside the top cell of the table. Click the <b>Image icon</b> in the Insert panel. Select the image you'd like to insert, click Okay, and give it <b>Alt text</b> (a succinct description of the image). Click inside the bottom cell. Type in your text. Give it a style from the format box screenshot below); Headings 4, 5 and 6 are generally best suited for captions. </div>

Select the table by clicking the border. Choose Left or Right on the <b>Table alignment tool</b> (screenshot at left).<br />
<br />
Before you publish the page, make sure to preview it in at least two different browsers, as tables appear differently in different browsers. <br />

<br />
For the next four months, I will hold a Connect session on Basic Dreamweaver Skills, on the first Wednesday of every month at 9 a.m. Each session should take about 40 minutes. If you are taking over the maintenance of a new web site, these sessions may come in handy.<br />
<br />
The schedule:<br />
<ul>
<li>February 6th: Defining the site in Dreamweaver/Using Dreamweaver's FTP</li>
<li>March 6th: Adding basic content (text, pictures, bullet points, headers, links)</li>
<li>April 3rd: Creating new pages (1, 2 and 3 column formats will be discussed) </li>
<li>May 1st: Working with SSIs (top and left navigation panels, footer) </li>
</ul>
Look for emails announcing each session. If you need more information, please email me at <a href="mailto:jeffrey.wood@colostate.edu" target="_blank">jeffrey.wood@colostate.edu</a>.<br />

This can be called the 25 second rule: that your page will load within 25 seconds on a 384kbs (kilobits per second) modem.<br />
<br />
Dreamweaver has a page load time indicator in <i>very small</i> characters in the lower right corner of the document panel. It's easy to miss (see screenshot below). But it will tell you at any given time what your page load time is.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlZefzIeqS1Q5BUwxXWXjoeQbnsppKga3j3goNzDw2lFY9JBMh0KfrBwXlRuVUV1PLr2bqpSxOBwyysJVyuZrCmVRna__hcdChXGD-GVcMY90e7kPmufLGMnWbB74EAjWsIUDFRSNqY3yI/s1600/dw2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="49" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlZefzIeqS1Q5BUwxXWXjoeQbnsppKga3j3goNzDw2lFY9JBMh0KfrBwXlRuVUV1PLr2bqpSxOBwyysJVyuZrCmVRna__hcdChXGD-GVcMY90e7kPmufLGMnWbB74EAjWsIUDFRSNqY3yI/s400/dw2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If you want to change the sped of the modem to see how fast your page will load under various conditions, go to the <b>Edit </b>menu, choose <b>Preferences</b>, choose <b>Window Sizes</b>. At the bottom of the dialogue box you will find a pulldown menu to change the speed of the modem (see below).<br />

<br />
Go to the <b>File </b>menu, choose <b>Properties</b>, then go to the <b>Securities </b>tab. Choose <b>Password Security</b>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-CE9p5I4DYmeH9pTM_UENsCx5UBh5BROLlVNM5fpHHH99X09Gv8UKW0O9VOhF5d3yO45V4fs0WmekvP1T6TmpgKy4cC8ax2gApHvtC2Su5XFyQzVnYVO5pzVhCz9FMS-JfE_uw6xTWXNO/s1600/adobe1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="185" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-CE9p5I4DYmeH9pTM_UENsCx5UBh5BROLlVNM5fpHHH99X09Gv8UKW0O9VOhF5d3yO45V4fs0WmekvP1T6TmpgKy4cC8ax2gApHvtC2Su5XFyQzVnYVO5pzVhCz9FMS-JfE_uw6xTWXNO/s400/adobe1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Check the <b>Require a Password...</b> checkbox and enter a password.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhQQkJHIjSkrmXDzOMfymzrq8ql73wNiPm4JhkZZNn1TXmosDlu1isbm2LwZ3oEDS1KP7q3C5XqPgCdM_8httiBK4DNVK1DLhfP3sOJ09F60EbgDEvtnTiO8gfaktjnFGPJ_nTYkmD-6Xs/s1600/adobe2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="62" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhQQkJHIjSkrmXDzOMfymzrq8ql73wNiPm4JhkZZNn1TXmosDlu1isbm2LwZ3oEDS1KP7q3C5XqPgCdM_8httiBK4DNVK1DLhfP3sOJ09F60EbgDEvtnTiO8gfaktjnFGPJ_nTYkmD-6Xs/s400/adobe2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Click <b>OK</b>, then re-enter the password when prompted. You'll get a warning that security features won't be enabled until you resave the document. Click <b>OK</b> to acknowledge the warning, and then <b>OK </b>one last time to close the dialogue box. <br />
<br />
Then, resave the document to enable password security (preferably under a different document name so you can tell the two apart).<br />
<br />
That's it. If it's a PDF to be posted online, post it as you would normally. Anyone trying to open the document,whether online or off, will encounter the dialogue box below. Once they enter the correct password, they'll be able to access the document. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijTpOb677CZdeyY33J1zGiQmF3h7kBrMJjxu-6-FgyKjQphmwzeS4F_Wymk1uHdlTg_725-Yr0fnRywUvFekXT8F4ZIzPYXTc6tjB3Ui_InJkh7q0hjku4luv7DnJ1cprNIDwYQOs2Ym3W/s1600/adobe3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="120" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijTpOb677CZdeyY33J1zGiQmF3h7kBrMJjxu-6-FgyKjQphmwzeS4F_Wymk1uHdlTg_725-Yr0fnRywUvFekXT8F4ZIzPYXTc6tjB3Ui_InJkh7q0hjku4luv7DnJ1cprNIDwYQOs2Ym3W/s400/adobe3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

What makes the command particularly useful is that you can customize the limits of the search. I use this <i>all the time</i>. It's a real time-saver.<br />
<br />
To start, go to the <b>Edit </b>menu, and choose the <b>Find and Replace</b> command. The dialogue box below will appear.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYgnJ_V7oq77-T4beHFbFB924v7EpxqlQyf5i3f7oa1ueetq-koW4ATxX1o9IdISnpJpAIUu2oerxQTTFoE3OehdrEEtNYl_U1lJSt94ZcFO8xopI_h_lmVONWthSGSpycejBzE-Bebqtp/s1600/search3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYgnJ_V7oq77-T4beHFbFB924v7EpxqlQyf5i3f7oa1ueetq-koW4ATxX1o9IdISnpJpAIUu2oerxQTTFoE3OehdrEEtNYl_U1lJSt94ZcFO8xopI_h_lmVONWthSGSpycejBzE-Bebqtp/s400/search3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The <b>Find </b>text box and the <b>Replace </b>text box are pretty self-explanatory. Where this really becomes useful is in using the <b>Find In</b> and <b>Search</b> pulldown menus at the upper left.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS8vHpxdD2oUMaQAE_L4U9eO2FPg1Ksyc77VRClwJorhgOEMaMWzRGeWw9f7uXxVqmolc9ZIKjCxKBmOMYAZAi4roVafK7ce5WKqO3JV75UBTPGyXVD5E4SkywPujBPIa_MiuwmdnR5S7G/s1600/search1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS8vHpxdD2oUMaQAE_L4U9eO2FPg1Ksyc77VRClwJorhgOEMaMWzRGeWw9f7uXxVqmolc9ZIKjCxKBmOMYAZAi4roVafK7ce5WKqO3JV75UBTPGyXVD5E4SkywPujBPIa_MiuwmdnR5S7G/s1600/search1.jpg" /></a><br />
The <b>Find In</b> menu (see screenshot at left) allows you to find/replace in just one page, a selected set of pages, a selected folder, or an entire site. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYDyZsqJ_x4XlzMYzMmtSPqdEoRWnGdC2zYixwD_L4muY_vWi7mx3wCZh4Mz8yZ38xNr6RaGHI9Q_q9q5kQAWuzJhqdHDkKOm_qauALjpNMM653-jqB6mzHBDOrkEem3diODAeznNQkHBh/s1600/search2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYDyZsqJ_x4XlzMYzMmtSPqdEoRWnGdC2zYixwD_L4muY_vWi7mx3wCZh4Mz8yZ38xNr6RaGHI9Q_q9q5kQAWuzJhqdHDkKOm_qauALjpNMM653-jqB6mzHBDOrkEem3diODAeznNQkHBh/s1600/search2.jpg" /></a></div>
The <b>Search </b>menu (see screenshot at right) allows you to find/replace either in the <b>Text </b>or in the <b>Source Code</b>, but in addition can find/replace inside <b>Specific Tags</b> only, and even, using <b>Text (Advanced)</b>, to find/replace text only within specific tags (e.g. - a link, a header, a table).<br />
<br />
By using these two pulldown menus wisely, you can save yourself hours of time. <br />

Pixlr is a free browser-based image editor, where you upload an image, manipulate it online, and the download the result. Now Pixlr has three settings (shown above):<br />
<br />
Pixlr editor (Advanced) is the most useful tool of the three, allowing you to resize images, combine images, add text, use filters, and many other commands. The look and feel is very similar to Photoshop, so if you want to get comfortable with using Photoshop, Pixlr is not a bad way to start. And, unlike Photoshop, it's free! <br />
<br />
Pixlr express (Efficient) presents only a handful of the most useful tools: resizing, text, and basic effects. In my humble opinion, the least useful of the three settings.<br />
<br />
Pixlr-o-matic (Playful) is, as the name implies the most fun of the three, allowing you to add many cool and interesting effects, quickly and easily. Three of them are shown below (the original photo is from 4-H).<br />

<br />
<b>Selectively prevent automatic sync</b>: If you have lots of music in iTunes on your PC, it will overwhelm your iPad memory very quickly. Hold down Shift-Ctrl (or Command-Option, on a Mac) in iTunes while plugging your iPad in, and iTunes will skip the automatic sync just this once. Alternatively, you can safely interrupt a sync by dragging the unlock slider on your device while the iPad is midsync.<br />
<br />
<b>Create custom shortcuts for common phrases</b>: Great for addresses, or commonly used phrases. Make AutoCorrect work for you by teaching iOS to transform shorthand (such as "omw") into common phrases (like "on my way") using iOS 5 shortcuts. Simply navigate to Settings, General, Keyboard, and select Add New Shortcut. Type the phrase you want to shorten in the Phrase field, and then type the shortened version you want to use in the Shortcut field.<br />
<br />
<b>Restrict mature content:</b> Go to Settings, General, Restrictions and tap Enable Restrictions to selectively apply controls on your apps, content, Game Center, and more. You can use this setting to limit mature content on your new iPad by disabling explicit-language recognition, blocking podcasts that have the "Explicit" tag, or blocking movies, TV shows, and apps that are rated for mature audiences.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Sync your bookmarks</b>: This is my favorite. You can use iTunes to sync your iPad's Safari bookmarks with your PC's Web browser. Open the iPad tab in iTunes, click the Info tab, scroll down to the Other heading, check Sync bookmarks with, and choose your preferred browser.<br />
<br />
<b>Download the free iPad User's Guide</b>: iPad doesn't come with a printed manual. However, you can download the PDF version of the iPad User's Guide from Apple's Web site, or you can read it in iBooks if you have that installed (iBooks is available as a free download in the App Store). <br />
<b>Screenshots</b>: Take a screenshot of whatever is on the screen: Press Home and the sleep/wake button simultaneously. The screenshot will automatically appear in your Camera Roll.<br />
<br />
<b>Multitasking</b>: You likely already know that you can press the Home button twice to bring up a list of currently running apps. However, you can also swipe the multitasking bar to the right to quickly access audio/video playback controls, a shortcut to the iTunes app itself, and volume controls.<br />
<br />
<b>URLs</b>: You can check a linked word's actual destination URL by touching and holding down on the link. It's a smart strategy to help you insure the link is legitimate.<br />
<br />
<b>Web Shortcuts</b>: Head to the webpage you want to create the shortcut to, tap
the “+” sign at the top of the page and select “Add to Home Screen.” This will
then create a shortcut icon offering one-click access to your favorite sites.
<b> </b><br />
<br />
<b>Multiple spaces</b>: I don't know if this is useful, but it sure is cool. The spacebar will create as many spaces as there are fingers
on it, so one finger will produce one space, two fingers two spaces and so on.<br />

Five more cool tricks next week! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4874987539749043084.post-70976139218727316022012-08-16T14:03:00.001-07:002012-08-16T14:04:52.540-07:00Fall 2012 Connect ScheduleHappy Fair Season! Below is the schedule for Connect sessions offered by the Tech Unit of CSU Extension. There are two basic threads: on the first Wednesday of every month we'll be exploring Adobe Acrobat and the creation of PDF forms; on the third Wednesday of each month Joanne Littlefield and I will collaborate on a series of sessions about working with graphics, logos and templates.<br />
<br />
All sessions will start at 9 a.m. MST, and will last approximately 45 minutes. <br />
<br />
• 9/5 – Adobe forms 1: Creating the form <br />

<br />
In addition, the Adobe Acrobat sessions will be offered to our Extension colleagues across the country through eXtension. Please print your completed form."<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAdDN8Zv5MZKn51SXiTgZXRx1EY9uy9OBuZCT3jK7Bt5Ai9r7-KEqLHdqruPR2u6xLV_vi44E2V6nV0n6KjmFKrieBv26l7MTqdJM_KakHVr1eoKhXaNWxgDSzi-Ljg0PHYau39W75fAue/s1600/acro2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="31" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAdDN8Zv5MZKn51SXiTgZXRx1EY9uy9OBuZCT3jK7Bt5Ai9r7-KEqLHdqruPR2u6xLV_vi44E2V6nV0n6KjmFKrieBv26l7MTqdJM_KakHVr1eoKhXaNWxgDSzi-Ljg0PHYau39W75fAue/s400/acro2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You can allow end-users to save their data on a form, however, even if they only have access to the free Adobe Reader. All you need to do is enable the Adobe Reader to save the data on your form.
After you've completed your form, save it, so you have a copy.<br />
<br />
Then, go to the File menu, choose <b>Save As> Reader Extended PDF> Enable Additional Features</b> (see screenshot below).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP085z5Jop_OuAKlpLrbSToxWB-hxY23ctMXxdCGMyWy5RNrEqKIo-M4jMuRLk9CVSKIYwlJ8U1QFIk5Hqe0EmZGp5SbQ-rPSVatHjew6LMV10ctEVgjGsr_mg_T90hnMb1lSa7OOrcGHu/s1600/acro1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP085z5Jop_OuAKlpLrbSToxWB-hxY23ctMXxdCGMyWy5RNrEqKIo-M4jMuRLk9CVSKIYwlJ8U1QFIk5Hqe0EmZGp5SbQ-rPSVatHjew6LMV10ctEVgjGsr_mg_T90hnMb1lSa7OOrcGHu/s400/acro1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, when the end-user opens up that form, they will get the following message: "You can save data typed into this form."<br />
<br />
